Frequently Asked Questions

What is faux finishing? The term “faux finishing” has come to mean the application and layering of paint, textures, glazes, foils, plasters, and other materials to create decorative painting finishes for walls, ceilings, furniture, and accessories.
What are the advantages of decorative painting? Decorative painting, including faux finishing and stenciling, will allow you to use your ideas and imagination to create a one-of-a-kind room in your home. Most decorative painting will avoid the common problems of wallpaper such as splitting seams, peeling edges, and messy stripping. It can also mimic the appearance of textures, wallpaper, tile, and natural materials often with less cost. Decorative accents can be placed in strategic places around windows, on ceilings, under cabinets, and so forth. And we can custom cut stencils to match your curtain, upholstery, or bedding fabrics.
What finishes are currently most popular? The clients of Prestige Faux Design benefit from our expertise in creating any desired artistic treatment. This year, we have been applying quite a bit of hand-painted paper, shimmering metallic plaster, Venetian plaster, stone finishes, lime plasters, and crackled foil. Embossed stenciling is also a popular look these days.
Do you offer any services besides faux finishing? We also provide custom accessories, wood graining, ceramic tile repainting, restoration, gilding, historical stencil cutting, ceiling medallions, lime painting, brick and stone creation or refinishing, furniture and cabinet repainting, countertop refinishing, demonstrations, classes, and color consultations, just to mention a few.
What products do you use? Prestige Faux Designers have been instructed in most of the major faux finishing product lines, and we pride ourselves on using the finest materials which will produce the desired effect for your particular project. Primarily we use products from Faux Effects, Perfetto, Pro Faux, Golden Artists Colors, Modern Masters, and Atova Italian Plasters. The products we use are water-borne and eco-friendly. It is our goal to continue learning about and utilizing new technologies in our field.
Over what types of surfaces can faux finishing be applied? Faux finishing can be done over any surface that doesn’t move while we are painting it!! We apply finishes over paneling, wallpaper, ceramic, glass, Formica, wood, drywall, plaster, concrete, stone, and metal. Faux finishing is a great way to update out-of-style fireplaces, furniture, countertops, ceramic tile, paneling, and cabinets, for example.
Is there a way to have a plaster technique without actual texture? Several of our plaster finishes are flat and smooth. We also can create textured looks with glaze, which is also smooth.
How do I change the look of my walls in the future if I’ve had decorative painting done? Most of the finishes which Prestige Faux Design apply can be primed and repainted in the future. If you have chosen a heavily textured finish, you have several options: repaint and reglaze the texture and continue to enjoy the texture in a different color; have the texture sanded off; or have the texture skim-coated. Texture can be applied over existing wallpaper or wallpaper liner so that the texture can be removed later with the paper. Hand-painted papers are removed in the same manner as wallpaper.
What is entailed in a color consultation? One of our color specialists will come to your home to assist you in choosing the base colors for walls and ceilings. This can be done before your base painter begins, and we will provide your base painter with a room-by-room color chart listing color, manufacturer, and sheen. This service can help you with one room or a whole house, and is charged for by the hour.
What is the process for having a decorative painting or color consultation? We offer on-site consultations at a time convenient to you. Please refer to the PROCESS page of this website for more detailed information about consultations. We will also work in cooperation with your interior decorator.
How is the price of each project determined? The price of your project is based on the square footage of the area to be done, the complexity of the chosen finish, architectural aspects of the area like height, and cost of the materials.
